About this Project
The Problem
In 1983, bush fires in Ghana led to extensive forest degradation, the knock-on impact of which continues to be felt today. After losing forest cover, land became more vulnerable to soil degradation, and the economic impact of the disaster and lack of resources that followed have increased other deforestation drivers such as logging and mining.
The Solution
The Kwamisa Community Forest project works with local communities to plant teak trees across areas of degraded forest. As well as sequestering carbon, these trees will have long-term benefits for people and the planet: they’ll help prevent further desertification, increase biodiversity, and support food and water security.
