Lamahi Protected Reforestation, Nepal
Location
Nepal
Tree Target
500,000
Solution Type
Reforestation
Programme Type
Dedicated Site
Fact File
🇳🇵 Lamahi is part of the Dang region in Nepal’s Terai province, one of the areas hit the hardest by climate change with deforestation contributing to the increase in natural disasters.
🐆 Reforesting in the Lamahi area will help to provide habitat for over 200 bird species, Asiatic elephants, leopards, and globally threatened four-horned antelopes.
🏔️ Tree cover can also protect against earthquake damage by minimising seismic waves. Since Nepal is an earthquake prone area, this is an additional win for the communities living around protected forests.

About this Project
The Problem
After years of deforestation, less than 30% of Nepal’s native forests remain, and the loss of trees heavily impacts local communities and threatens the country’s rich biodiversity. Deforestation also removes a line of defense against natural disasters like floods and landslides, which are becoming increasingly common as global warming melts Nepal’s glaciers.
The Solution
Benefex is partnering with Furthr to plant trees across a 301 hectare site in the Ajambari Community Forest in Terai, Nepal. These trees will not only help with distaster prevention, but will also connect fragmented areas of forest, providing vital habitat for wildlife, lowering human-animal conflict. With an initial commitment to plant 507,528 trees over the course of 36 months, 14,098 trees will be planted each month from July 2022 onward.
