About this Project
The Problem
With a population of over 1.4 billion, India is fast becoming one of the most energy intensive areas on the planet and still relies heavily on fossil fuel power to meet electricity needs as more people are connected to the grid.
The country is also a major producer of and exporter of rice, the production of which results in significant amounts of agricultural waste.
The Solution
The project uses rice husks from nearby rice mills to create energy in a 5MW cogeneration power plant. The husks are combusted in a boiler, producing high-pressure steam which is used to turn a turbine. This in turn drives a generator to produce electricity.
The project powers a local paper product manufacturer, allowing local industry to progress without the need for fossil fuels. This prevents greenhouse gases from being released into the atmosphere and warming the planet further.
