About this Project
The Problem
About half of Mozambique’s population don’t have access to clean water, meaning people have no option but to boil water for their basic needs. In rural areas, the percentage without clean, safe water access is often even greater. This means many people rely on unclean water sources like rivers and hand-dug shallow wells and boiling the water to sanitize it. Wood is the primary fuel source for this method of water sanitation, driving deforestation and releasing greenhouse gas emissions from the combustion of wood.
The Solution
The program rehabilitates and maintains disused community water pumps in rural Mozambique to ensure communities have safe water access. It also increases local capacity to ensure that the water points are managed into the future. By implementing a WASH campaign and training, the project also improves hygiene and sanitation practices within the communities.
