About this Project
The Problem
In the last 40 years, we’ve lost one third of seagrass meadows globally.
Seagrass is a flowering plant that lives in shallow coastal waters and is estimated to be 35x faster than rainforests at removing CO2 from the atmosphere. Although seagrass meadows occupy only 0.1% of the seafloor, they are responsible for 11% of the organic carbon buried in the ocean.
The benefits go beyond carbon sequestration: Seagrass meadows provide vital habitat to marine biodiversity, with seagrass fisheries supporting 20% of the worlds largest fisheries. This means they are critical in preserving marine biodiversity, and in global food security efforts.
The Solution
Project Seagrass are restoring seagrass meadows in the UK as well as other locations globally, working with researchers to find the best methods for this vital conservation work. They collaborate closely with fishing communities and other local stakeholders to make sure that they have community buy-in for projects to ensure ongoing protection of meadows.
